Dallas Floor Coverings Company Rolls Out Unique Business Model

Carpet One DFW does indeed cover all the bases when it comes to offering floor coverings for homes and small businesses. Carpets, rugs, hardwoods, ceramic tiles, laminates, you name it – if it goes on floors, it’s likely found behind the doors of any of the six Dallas-area Carpet One DFW showrooms. And once the products are chosen, installation is handled by the company’s highly-trained technicians.

But there are other kinds of coverage that give the company a chance to roll over the competition in the $25 billion-a-year floor covering industry. For example: Carpet One DFW provides some bold guarantees designed to retain customers over the long run. And the people who work in the showrooms and load up the products in the warehouses are all given a chance to share in the company’s success – more so than the typical 401K plan.

Back in 1996, Carpet One DFW began offering its employees an ESOP – Employee Stock Ownership Plan. The result, says CEO Larry Barr, was an immediate positive impact on its workforce. “We have had a very successful company at the very beginning, but it has been astronomically successful since the time we’ve done this employee stock ownership plan,” Barr said. “Basically, every time a customer calls in, they’re speaking to an owner of this company and we empower these people to take full ownership of these customers in each and every situation. And as an owner you have a certain responsibility, so a customer feels they are getting the very best treatment they are going to get – whether they’re talking to me or talking to a consultant – their satisfaction is translated into bottom-line dollars for this company.”

The consultants and designers who work for Carpet One DFW have that ESOP incentive to excel in customer service, and can also rely on the deepest inventory in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The fact that Carpet One DFW is part of a national co-op with 1500 member stores across the U.S. also means a lot of group buying power, which translates into lower prices for consumers. Yet there are added pressures in the floor covering business that require the company to stand out from the pack. After all, a customer can choose the style and color that he or she thinks will fit just right on their kitchen floor or in a conference room. But once that product is on that floor, the customer can change his or her mind at the last minute.

It’s for such occasions that Carpet One DFW’s “Beautiful Guarantee” was created. It’s the only floor covering company in the industry offering such a deal for customers – if they’re not happy with what they’ve selected the company will remove the product free of charge.

Carpet One DFW offers the “Beautiful Guarantee” for reasons other than to separate itself from other Dallas tile or Dallas carpet companies. “We consider it a commitment to our customer,” says Gary Gilbert, vice president of sales. “Our customers are very important to us and a lot of our customers are repeat customers, and we want them to be customers for life. The best way to do that is guarantee that they’re happy with the product that we’re putting in their home. So we have what is called the “Beautiful Guarantee”, and basically we promise that they’ll love the way their new floor looks or we’ll replace it for free, both the product and the installation.

“We want them to be completely satisfied and we’re there to stay with them until the very end of the project and beyond.”

If a company wants to stay successful – and keep being invited back into their customer’s homes – they’ll also have to stay up on the latest news regarding environmental health. Carpet and other floor products that will end up in a child’s bedroom, for example, may need to have the latest safeguards for allergens and other pollutants. Carpet One DFW recently addressed this issue with its Healthier Living Installation System.

“We do realize that consumers are very concerned about the health and cleanliness of their homes, especially those who have allergies and other things like that,” Gilbert said. “The Healthier Living Installation System incorporates HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) backpack filters and booties when we go into the home. We also provide an anti-microbial spray to eliminate any of the mold, mildew and odors that might come from that installation, and the cushions that we use have anti-microbials that will prevent odors in the future. So it’s an entire system that offers that consumer a very healthy, safe environment.”
